Supporting Marie Curie – Great Local Contributions

May 26, 2025 By Ray Fishman 1 Comment

Marie Curie is the U.K.’s leading end of life charity providing palliative care in people’s own homes through the famous Marie Curie nurses and support for all the family. This free service is for anyone with an illness of any kind that they are likely to die from.

They also provide bereavement support and financial advice, fund research into end of life care, and lead campaigns to influence government policy in this area.

Marie Curie can only continue to do all this by regular fundraising. Although a National Charity it is local people and their families who benefit.

Your local Fundraising Group for Marie Curie have gone from strength to strength in recent times. Formed in 2011 we enthusiastically engage with the local community and businesses in Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford and Romsey. We aim to do this while raising funds in an enjoyable way.

In the last Financial year, 1st April 2023 to 31st March 2024 we raised an amazing £13,000. In total we have raised over £120,000, something of which to be proud.

You will see us and other lovely volunteers around and about the area in our distinctive yellow colours and Daffodil Hats during the Annual Great Daffodil Appeal collections every March. But there is much more happening.

Here is Susan Byrne ready for action in March this year.

Here are some of the other great things with which we have been involved.

Have you seen us at the Thornden Hall Movie nights? Neil Daykin from Thornden was pleased to welcome and support the team at Movie nights. Since September 2023 patrons have donated over £1300.

Here is a photo showing Nicolette Lock thanking Neil and presenting him with a Certificate to record this achievement.

One of our team is Jenny Macklin. You may have seen her welcoming you to the Marie Curie shop in the Fryern Arcade. She recently completed 30 years voluntary service there. How amazing is that?

Not content with that amazing record daughter Jo and Granddaughter, Frankie carry on the family tradition of Fundraising at a recent Daffodil Appeal collections.

Here is Jenny (on the right) with Carole Bright at a Christmas event in Eastleigh.

Did you see Carole Bright at the excellent Craft Fair at Chandler’s Ford Library in April? Here are some of her hand knitted Easter themed items. This year Carole has raised over £300.

This is of Jo Macklin.

Jo completed a sky dive on 10th May 2025 from 10,000 feet over Salisbury, Wiltshire and raised £435 for Marie Curie.

Jo said it was both exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. She is the daughter of Jenny Macklin, our local FRG Member, who has volunteered at our local Marie Curie shop for over 30 years.

Jo’s daughter, Frankie has also joined us at GDA collections locally. A family affair indeed.

Quizzes

The Concorde Club in Eastleigh have hosted a Quiz for us from time to time. This year we are at the Cleveland Bay Pub on Monday May 19th .

Local businesses supply Raffle prizes. Much appreciated in these difficult economical times. Do you have any unwanted gifts you could donate for our future Raffles?

Summer Fetes

We love attending Summer and School fetes. ….for many years we have joined Jade at The Cleveland Bay Pub for her End of School Year Summer event. Jade is so supportive and is very community minded.

Here we meet the Mayor at last year’s celebrations. See us here again and at Hiltingbury School this Summer.

We raised £278 at a Quiz at the Cleveland Bay on Monday 19th

Summer Event – NGS garden in Romsey on Sunday 20th July

This Summer we are planning our most ambitious Fundraiser to date.

We are staging a Summer picnic at an NGS garden in Romsey on Sunday 20th July.
