Wellie’s Gardening Tips for January 2020

This is a great time to plan what you would like to do in the garden for the rest of the year. Take a note book and walk around the garden. Look at seed catalogues for ideas of what to sow.

Midwinter is a tough time for wildlife in the garden. Make sure there is a continuous supply of food and fresh water. Knock snow off branches, especially conifers, if they are bending under the weight.

2019 December Gardening Tips by Wellie

Keep raking up those leaves from the lawn and borders.

If it’s a mild winter, continue to cut the lawn if it’s growing, but raise the height of the mower blades.

From now until the end of March is the time to plant any bare rooted trees, shrubs and roses.

Check stored fruit, throw out any that are rotten.

Reduce watering on houseplants.

Jobs to do as winter approaches and the garden quietens. Rake up leaves on the lawn. Tie-in long whippy shoots of climbers and wall shrubs.

Dead head spring bulbs. Prune hydrangeas by cutting back old flowerheads to first pair of strong buds, and cut up to a third of oldest stems back to their base.

Now is the perfect time to prune fruit trees to maintain an open, balanced structure and encourage quality fruit production. However plums, cherries and other stone fruits should not be pruned until the summer as winter pruning will make them susceptible to silver leaf fungus.

Wallflowers can be planted now, providing foliage ground cover all winter, and fragrance and colour next spring. Continue planting spring flowering bulbs.

Forty Years in Chandler’s Ford – a Journal (Part 62)

Barry achieves some good half-mile times; a new orchid for Gran; a solar eclipse; the pleasure of a seat at Centre Court; devastation in Oakwood Road; Jock is confirmed in Winchester Cathedral, and an Open Day, held at Chelsea College – where a Jamaican girl impresses.

Book 44

On June 19th 1954, Gran is delighted for Barry, who:

…came in very late, straight from Uxbridge, where he had been running in RAF Fighter Command Championships, and was delighted to have won the half-mile race in his best ever time – 1min. 56.7 sec.  This gives him next week at Uxbridge, undergoing training and running in matches – a very enjoyable way of spending one of his few remaining weeks in the Royal Air Force!
