My Adventure in Wales – Zip World Velocity 2

June 29, 2021 By Andy Vining 7 Comments

I’m sharing the video of my adventure in Wales recently.

I went up there to stay in a farm cottage for a week with my wife and daughter. My wife Val has Parkinson’s disease so it was a good change of scenery for her for a few days and it was the Thursday of our Holiday that we ventured out to Zip World.

I had booked in the date and time some day before so we arrived and I got my wife settled into the very nice restaurant there and the staff said they would look after her while I went on my adventure.

So we are weighed and photographed and answered questions about my general health but nothing about my age!!

Then the staff were just brilliant in kitting us out with our very substantial harness and hard hat.

I don’t think the hat would have been any good if we had fallen off the Zip at 100 MPH but at least it was useful to fix the video camera too!!

Once kitted out we went to Velocity 1 and instructions were given on what to do and we were fixed to the Zip wire for a short go down the small Zip.

That was really great and over too quick but the idea is you go on the small on and if you are happy with that you can go on Velocity 2.

So we all get into a big truck and slowly driven up the side of the old Slate quarry right to the top, really high up and beautiful views.

Then we realise what we are in for!! The Vally was a long way below us and we were going down there at 100 mph on a Zip Wire!

I was excited and stood in line where they again gave more safety instructions and fitted the camera to our helmets.

You climb up onto and lay down on a table and then attached the harness to the Zip Wire. Everything is checked and checked again.

The 3-2-1 and away you go, It was an awesome sensation going down the wire. My only regret was it only lasted 55 seconds.

Arrived safely at the bottom, and unlatched from the harness and then there is a 10 minute walk down the rest of the way back to unharness and a well earned lunch and a cup of tea.

Val was really pleased to see me back in one piece.

So that was the Morning done.

Then in the afternoon we drove 15 miles to the Forest Coaster. This was much less adventurous but really great fun.

You sit in this glorified soapbox trolly and are winched right up to the top of a hill in the forest the at the top of the track you are let go.

It travels as can be seen in the Video at about 40 mph with very fast bends and turns but great fun all the same and I had three goes on that as it was not busy and there was no waiting
What a great day out in Wales. Loved it!

Then a much quitter pursuit on the last day we were invited by the farmer where we were staying to see his sheep being sheared.

That was a bit different and not something that happens usually when on holiday!

Looks to be great fun Andy, but I’m a Terra Firma man myself and prefer to leave things like that to you younger people ! … Keep smiling …

    Hi Andy,

We zipped down the mountain – three runs at Zip World – several years ago on a family outing, setting off in the clouds. You’re right. What a fabulous experience it is!

Then we had the best fish and chip supper ever in Blaenau Ffestiniog – memorable because they sent me next door to get wine for the table.

Chandler’s Ford Parish Council should invest in zipwires in local playing fields instead of spending our money on who knows what? The kids would love it and so would we!

Robbie, it sounds like a great idea! Surely the Parish Council can be creative 🙂

Janet, I was asking for outdoor recreational facilities for teenagers like zipwires and outdoor gym equipment at Hiltingbury rec eleven years ago when the Parish council came into being. I resigned as a councillor, in total despair, after a year. Too much party politics and too little action for me. I channelled my energies and experience elsewhere and away from a lost cause!!!
