In a slight variation on the Saturday morning quiz, I thought I would combine it with my occasional “days out” features, and post some pictures of somewhere I’ve been this week.
All photos are of the same place – but where?
Looks as if the ceiling hasn’t been swept for some time …

Even more cobwebs on the windows – could this be a haunted house?

A delivery bicycle – something to do with the grocery trade?

Could these be false teeth for a dragon?

What’s this furry friend peeking over the parapet?

And what are these? An early form of snow shoe?

OK, final clue. Running water.
Where was I?
Here are the photos without the significant lettering hidden:

and a zoomed-out picture of the furry friend.

Is it Winchester City Mill? Why the snowshoes, maybe for walking on piles of corn or flour?
My thoughts too – the old mill in Winchester
Yes, well done Mike and Doug. You can share the prize of an imaginary bag of wholegrain flour. It is indeed the City Mill in Winchester, now owned by the National Trust.
Did you buy the flour and make some bread? I want some freshly baked bread please.
I went there many many years ago, and I remember the sound of the water!
I banged my head on the low beams – twice!
Winchester City Mill – still working and producing flour (albeit at fraction of its output in earlier times).
The cobwebs are deliberate – they keep the wood-eating bugs out of the rafters.
The snow shoes are, indeed, for walking on piles of grain.
And the dragon’s teeth are cogs for the first wheel (after the driving wheel from the waterwheel) in the mechanism. Made of wood so that the cogs would break if there were a jam, and so prevent damage to other parts of the mechanism
Is there a ‘story’ with the tradesman’s bike, and what is the ‘furry friend’ please ?
The bike is probably just a bit of decor, which may or may not be directly connected with the mill. I’ll update the post with a photo that doesn’t have the lettering hidden.
I think the furry friend is just something to entertain younger visitors.
As a long time member of the National Trust, I often pop in when in Winchester. It’s great to see it working; it’s also a haven for otters.
Did you see the live cam there?
