Have you heard of the Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt?
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight ‘Speak Their Name’ Suicide Memorial Quilt is a beautiful ongoing piece of art, created with love in memory of people lost to suicide by their bereaved friends and family. This project has been inspired by the quilts made in Greater Manchester and Yorkshire.
If you would like to make a square for a loved one please contact hampshirequilt@gmail.com. Follow ‘Hampshire & IOW Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt’ on Facebook to see the unique squares they have received so far, and read about all the moving stories.
Currently the Quilt is being displayed at the Chandler’s Ford Methodist Church where it will be until the 14th November. According to Beeb Deacon, one of the organisers, “the members of the church’s Women’s Fellowship adopted SOBS (Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide) as their charity in 2022 and raised money for us which has gone towards the Quilt.”
Here is a video with very moving stories shared by the families: Speak Their Name Suicide Memorial Quilt for Hampshire & IOW.
I saw the quilt at the weekend. It is a powerful piece of art work. It was a real privilege to see it, and get to know a bit of these individuals through their names and the stories that their families have generously shared with the world. Their names will always be spoken and they will be fondly remembered by their loved ones.
