The M27 will be completely closed in both directions between junctions 3 (M271) and junction 4 (M3) this weekend – from late evening Friday 31 January to early morning 3 February.
This is the third and final closure required for the replacement of the Romsey Road bridge. More details can be found on the Highways England website.
The diversion for eastbound traffic heading to the M3 will leave the M27 at Junction 2 (Ower), then via Romsey and Winchester to join the M3 at Junction 11 (Winnall). Traffic for Portsmouth will come off at Junction 3, then take the A27 through North Baddesley and Chilworth and rejoin the M27 at Junction 5 (airport). I wonder if anyone’s told the Highways England that there are major roadworks at the top of Bassett Green Avenue!
Westbound traffic has a much rawer deal. M3, A34 and A303 to Amesbury, then south to Salisbury and eventually get back to the M27 at Junction 2. Traffic coming down the M3 will be diverted to the A303 and Junction 8 to follow the same route. A 60-mile diversion around a 3-mile closure. Hmm, I think many drivers will be thinking “bourrez ceci pour une alouette” (well, the bilingual ones will) and using sat-nav to find a shorter route.
Local traffic will also be taken through North Baddesley and Chilworth to the north, and Lordswood and Bassett to the south.
I suggest before travelling anywhere over the weekend, you check google maps or the Highways Agency website for traffic news, and/or check traffic news on local and national radio. Or maybe just leave the car at home.
