Taking our COVID-19 permitted daily period of exercise is good for our health, but the restrictions on “keeping it local” can make it bit monotonous. So why not add a bit of variety and adventure to your walk by finding a route where you can spell out a word or phrase with the first letter of street names.
In true Blue Peter fashion, here is one I made earlier.
So Chippy’s Challenge is to find street names to spell out CHANDLER’S FORD TODAY. A prize of a year’s free subscription to Chandler’s Ford Today to the first to complete it. Just a few rules
- Photos must be taken in the correct order; however the streets do not have to be contiguous (bonus points if they are). Backtracking is permitted; you can also travel along a street that you previously or subsequently use for a photo.
- Letters appearing multiple times must be represented by different street names
- All streets must be in Chandler’s Ford.
- All photos must be taken in the same trip.
- You must travel under your own steam (as the YHA used to say). Walk, cycle, run, etc.
Good luck. and have fun.

What a brilliant idea – so many people thinking outside the box at the moment with many positives things too despite this worrying time for everyone
Stay safe

It took a 10km walk to spell out my words. I wanted to spell Eastleigh, but the I’s were too far away (I think there are two in Chandlers Ford and one each in Bishopstoke and Fair Oak)
Ray Fishman says
I’m on the case and I can do the I too.
Janet Williams says
Like a million people around the world, I exercise with Joe Wicks – that can be quite interesting!
Chippy, what is your definition of Chandler’s Ford? Boundaries?
Another good prize would be a little treat from Bay Leaves Larder (it’s still open)!
Chippy Minton says
I deliberately didn’t define Chandler’s Ford, but thought I would leave it to whatever the challenge accepters choose (within reason). Criteria could be: within the civil parish and/or within the ecclesiastical parish and/or west of the motorway and/or has a SO53 postcode and/or has “chandler’s ford” in the postal address
“where does Chandlers Ford start and end” could be a interesting post. I will leave that to those writers who actually live there.
Janet Williams says
Last Sunday I did:
Coach Hill Close
Common Road
Heathlands Road
Hursley Road
Neilson Close
Ramalley Lane
Rusland Close
South Miller’s Dale
Swanton Gardens
Wellbrooke Gardens
It seems I’ve failed this test rather miserably!
Doug Clews says
You really will have to try harder Janet (although a good effort, and far far better than I can do from a Nursing Home), but just think, just 1 vowel and you had a word, or even words, depending on the vowel …
Keep Smiling all …
Ray Fishman says
I have sent Janet a topical entry..all within Chandlers Ford and only a 2 mile round walk from my home
Chippy says
Looking forward to seeing it, Ray
Janet Williams says
Ray has sent me some images – showing the route that he has taken. I’ve put all these in 4 images. Well done Ray! Thank you!!
Am I right the game is to get the first letter of the street name, to form Chandler’s Ford Today? Has Ray got all these letters? Or have I misunderstood your game? What day is today?
Chippy says
Yes, the first letters have to spell Chandler’s Ford Today and the photos have to be taken in order. So first find a street beginning with C, then one beginning with H, then A, etc.
Ray Fishman says
Not what I thought …my attempt was in the order I came across them and spelt out Captain Tom.
Chippy says
The ‘rules’ were never intended to be rigid; more a way of turning a daily walk into a treasure hunt or orienteering course.
When I did my walk I planned it on a map first but an equally interesting project might be to go from street to street using the initial letters to make words until no more words can be found.
