Southampton General Hospital By Bus

March 26, 2014 By Janet Williams 7 Comments

Does anyone know the best way to get to Southampton General Hospital by bus from Chandler’s Ford?

Please let me know if you are familiar with the bus route. My son has a medical check-up and we’ll travel by bus in the holiday.

I phoned Bluestar (0845 number) this afternoon talking to a person for more than 10 minutes, but she couldn’t quite help me.

The lady answering my call told me the bus fare is £5.50 per person from Chandler’s Ford to Southampton City Centre. But she didn’t quite know how I should proceed from there.

After talking to another person later, she suggested that I buy a day ticket called Explorer (£8.50 each), so that I could take any bus in the network. She told me my teenage son (13 years old) will need to buy an adult ticket. The lady wasn’t confident about the bus I should take, but she mentioned possibly I should take U6 or U1 from the city centre.

Mother and son will spend £17 to get to Southampton General Hospital (6 miles each way from Chandler’s Ford).

Is there a cheaper way to get to Southampton General Hospital by bus from Chandler’s Ford?

After tweeting my post, I received this reply from @GeorgeOnToast:

@cfordtoday The £5.60 (Adult) Southampton+ Dayrider and the £4.60 (I think) (Child) Southampton+ Dayrider. Use B*1 to Winchester rd/Avenue..

@cfordtoday @GeorgeOnToast remember also the No. 46 bus (velvet bus) takes you direct to the general from Chandlers Ford & returns also.

I think the big problem with travelling by bus is that if you don’t know the area it’s very difficult to find out what bus you need.

Bus Route 3 (first bus) goes from Central station to the hospital, about every ten minutes and takes about 15 minutes.

    First Hampshire Current Timetables

There’s also Unilink Route 6 that goes from City Centre via Portswood and Swaythling. Every 20 minutes (Civic Centre at xx09, xx29, xx49; Portswood at xx21, xx41, xx01; Swaythling xx25, xx45, xx05, arr General Hosptital xx55, xx15, xx35)

Thanks. Now I need to find out the fare. £17 seems a lot for such a short trip.

Why is a 13-year-old considered an ‘adult’ in the eyes of the bus operators?

It always used to be 14 and above for adult fare – at least, it was when I was a a teenager. I think this age could go back to when school leaving age was 14, and public transport never caught up with ROSLA (raising of school leaving age)

Hi, you don’t even need to go as far as the common. The stop after Winchester Road roundabout will do.

(If you’re unsure: you have ASDA Chandler’s ford roundabout, then Chilworth roundabout, then Winchester road roundabout on Bluestar 1 route), then cross over for the U6H.
