Saying Goodbye To Lost Babies At Winchester Cathedral

May 5, 2013 By Janet Williams 2 Comments

Winchester Cathedral will be hosting a service for people who have lost a baby at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy.

The service will be at Winchester Cathedral on Saturday 11th May at 2.00pm.

There will be a time and place to acknowledge and remember the baby, whilst saying goodbye.

The Saying Goodbye events are the first national set of commemorative services.

Are the services only for mothers?

The services are for women who have suffered loss, their partners, their children and their extended family and friends.

They are for people of all faith or no faith at all.

According to the organisers of Saying Goodbye, “The loss of a baby is a devastating and traumatic experience for the mother and father, and of course for the extended family. Before 24 weeks gestation there is often no funeral service held, no tribute to commemorate a life unlived. For babies lost after this time, services are normally conducted while parents are in the depths of grief.”

The services are being held at Cathedrals and Minsters across the UK. These venues have been chosen for their beauty and grandeur – a wonderful tribute for all lost babies.

    That’s a nice idea.

I agree it’s very thoughtful. In the old days, an unborn child was never recognised. Pain couldn’t be uttered. Now, a service like this gave a lot of families a chance to say goodbye.
