Glorious Honey at Eastleigh Museum

June 20, 2015 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

I seem to have run out of honey again.

Do you know you can buy local honey from Eastleigh Museum?

Since creating Chandler’s Ford Today in March 2013, I’ve visited Eastleigh Museum more often, and have shared a few events from the museum with you.

Now I have also become a Friend of Eastleigh Museum. It’s an honour to be part of Eastleigh Museum.

Today I’m sharing with you one of the secrets of Eastleigh Museum – the honey.

Beekeeper suits are not always white.

As you enter Eastleigh Museum, to your right is an endearing gift shop, which sells books and DVD about the history of Eastleigh.

The gift shop also sells many local hand-made items, including hand-made cards, jewellery, pottery, recycled bags, and, local honey.

A while ago, I spoke to John and Sonja Davison, as I noticed they seem to have something to do with the very popular Hampshire Honey at the museum. See their recent tweet:

Lime Tree Honey

Eastleigh Citizen of Honour Sonja Davison told me the bees are busy in Eastleigh producing local honey for sale at Eastleigh museum. The honey is so popular that it regularly sells out.

Sonja explained, “What people don’t always realise is that honey is seasonal and we are now awaiting this year’s spring honey crop to come to fruition. In June the lime tree flowers open up and the bees head for it, bringing back supplies of nectar for the next crop. ”

“Lime Tree honey has a lovely delicate taste and will be sought after. We’ve been keeping 8 hives for about 5 years and we’re always learning. We have the stings to prove it! ”

“It’s a time-consuming but fascinating hobby and my husband John calls them his ‘girls’.”

The couple in bee suits remind me of the teletubbies.
Just returned from Provence loaded with honey (and wine, cheese, cherries and other goodies.) I could just have gone to Eastleigh. Some of the honey is from the lavender fields. I once had some from chestnut trees and that had a distinctive flavour.
