Gardening Tips In December By Mo

December 11, 2013 By Mo Mariner 1 Comment

In December, protect the outside tap from freezing up. Use bubble wrap, insulating foam or a purpose made cover.

This is a good time to take a look at the garden, and plan next year’s improvements.

  • Clear up any debris and annuals from the borders, dig over and apply some mulch to protect the roots of the perennials.
  • New trees, shrubs and roses can now be planted. It is often a good time to get rid of the old roses and plant new ones.
  • Book the mower in for a service and clean up the garden tools.

Feature of the Month: Mahonia: ‘Winter Sun’

Mahonia
Mo’s plant of December is Mahonia.

Mahonia are evergreen shrubs with large pinnate, leathery leaves which are often spine-toothed.

‘Winter Sun’ is a medium-sized evergreen shrub of upright growth, with long, spiny leaves and clusters of small fragrant bright yellow flowers, followed by blue-black berries.

They are hardy shrubs, and give the winter months a good show of colour. The foliage is green throughout the year. They grow to a height of 4 metres and a spread of 2.5 metres. Mahonia will grow in any soil type and in full or partial sun.

Keep warm in the garden & enjoy the winter sun.

Merry Christmas to you all.
