Fryern Arcade Old and New

May 4, 2014 By Janet Williams 25 Comments

Update 1st Nov 2016: Closed: Stairway Bakery and Coffee Shop at Fryern Arcade

Original post (below):

Before the opening of Costa Coffee (3rd May 2014) in the Fryern Arcade yesterday, there was a large sign on the outside wall of the building.

The advertisement read:

Stairway Bakery & Coffee Shop. Just Rolls. All Day Breakfasts.

The advert was next to the old D & G store. The Stairway sign has now gone. The D & G hardware store has moved to the other side of the Fryern Arcade.

You can now see the changes through these pictures.

Will five coffee shops make trade increase or decrease for individual premises. Custom divided between give shops would suggest less customers for each one, but the increased choice might attract people who would not otherwise go there so there could be more customers to go round.

Coffee shops which open 7 days a week – Waitrose and Costa – will be convenient for shoppers who shop on Sunday. Once the post office opens 7 days a week (with WH Smith) in late May, Fryern Arcade will be busier. It may not feel as quiet as before. It changes the atmosphere.

Ultimately, a coffee shop needs to sell decent coffee to keep me coming back.
