From Movies at the Hilt to Movies at the Hall

November 15, 2015 By Roger Clark 7 Comments

Dear Moviegoer,

I mentioned a few months ago that Nigel and I would be retiring from running Movies @ the Hilt from the end of this year. We had thoroughly enjoyed providing this service but we both had reasons for freeing-up our respective personal time.

Sadly, we have been unsuccessful in finding a new organiser and projectionist for the Hilt but we did listen to feedback that said you wanted movies to continue in the Chandler’s Ford community.

From January 2016: Movies at Thornden Hall

Therefore I am delighted to announce that Moviola’s Movies will continue to be shown in Hiltingbury, although the venue will change to the wonderful Thornden Hall theatre.

There will be a seamless transition as the Movies will start there from January 2016 and the really good news is that the ticket price will remain at £5.

Whereas I appreciate Thornden Hall is probably the furthermost point from the centre of our community, there are many benefits including booking your preferred seat through their online Box Office. It will be a theatre experience as the seats are comfortable, the surround system is the latest Dolby 7.1, the projector is cinema quality, and the screen is huge!

An affordable bar will be open from 6:45pm before the movie and during the interval. New Forest ice creams will also be sold.

The management at Thornden Hall have fully embraced this addition to their current offerings with total enthusiasm and are committed to maintaining a community feel.

Thornden Hall wanted to start off with a bang and here is their exciting initial movie programme:

  • January 15 – 45 Years
  • January 29 – AMY
  • February 26 – Sicario
  • April 1 – Lady in the Van
  • April 15 – Brooklyn
  • April 29 – CAROL

Getting to Thornden Hall on Winchester Road

I hope you will agree that this a top quality showing, peppered with potential Oscar nominations, and covering a diverse range of genres to suit every taste.

Finally I am aware that some of you, who don’t have the legs, or a car, may have a difficulty in getting to Thornden Hall. In this respect I would like us all to act as a community and help those less fortunate. Later on I will organise a car-sharing scheme for those who need a lift.

Thank you for your continued support for showing Movies in Hiltingbury.

About Roger Clark

Another Chandler's Ford ex-IBMer who is just learning to say NO to volunteer opportunities. Enjoyed flying and sailing after retirement but now golf and wildlife photography in the ascendancy. I do feel responsible for putting something back into the Community or organisations that I have enjoyed. Hence I have an active interest in the Hiltingbury Community Organisation and the Hilt, Winchester Photographic Society, South Winchester Golf Club, Festival Medical Services, and a charity called Ovacome.

Though I can’t get to the films (always clashes with other things), I am glad the showings are continuing. Can’t recommend Thornden Hall enough. Really comfortable seating (3 hours 20 minutes at Hamlet recently confirms this!) and good facilities.

The most important fact I need to know is “New Forest ice creams will also be sold”.

£5 for a seat at Thornden Hall – this is remarkable.

Thanks Allison and I agree with you and I have to add the staff are so welcoming and friendly as well.

We have been to the screenings, as we both adore the theatre, and we thought the experience was just outstanding.

The new Manager, Neil Daykin, has the vibrancy and experience to turn this facility into a real crown jewel within our neighbourhood. It’s going to be sooner rather than later.

Yes and parking is free! New Forest ice creams available for £2 (I will share one with you) plus coffee and reasonably priced drinks at the bar.

We are hoping for a community feel, as we have at the Hilt, so bring your friends.

I recently watched a show at MayFlower theatre in Southampton.

I would always prefer watching a show / film locally. I often find Thornden Hall’s seating more comfortable than that in some venues.

Keeping the price to £5 will certainly encourage more local people to go out and socialise. (Chandler’s Ford is a lonely place and film nights in an open space is a great idea.)

Roger, it is wonderful of you to think of people who don’t have the legs 🙂 or a car. Car sharing is a great idea. Allison and I watched a few shows together before at Thornden Hall, and we had a dedicated driver to drop us off and pick us up – he also came with his dog in the car to keep us entertained. Top class!

Many thanks, Janet, for your kind comments about the dedicated driver and their dog! The comment made one of them laugh – guess which one!

Roger, if I ever can get along to a film showing I like the look of I gladly will as I have thoroughly enjoyed going to the Hall.
