“Doing it for Imogen” – Bike Ride for Piam Brown Ward

September 2, 2016 By Janet Williams 1 Comment

“Doing it for Imogen” is a fundraising campaign, which I hope Chandler’s Ford Today readers would support.

Imogen is only 6 years old. She is suffering from a rare disease called Langerhans’ cell histiocytosis (LCH).

Imogen is being treated at The Piam Brown Ward, the children oncology ward at Southampton General Hospital.

The Piam Brown Ward is the Regional Paediatric Oncology and Haematology unit providing a specialist support service to young patients and their families.

Imogen first became ill in 2012 at the tender age of two. She was diagnosed with Langerhans’ Cell Histiocytosis and went through a year of chemotherapy.

She received the ‘all clear’ after that.

However in December last year, the condition was found to have returned and Imogen is again undergoing chemotherapy.

BPE – bike ride to raise £25,000

BPE Design and Support, based in Colden Common, are hoping to raise over £25,000 for the ward.

Over 20 staff and relatives from BPE Design and Support Ltd are going to complete the legendary 54 mile London to Brighton bike ride for Piam Brown ward on Sunday 11 September.

According to the company’s website, Imogen is the niece of the Office Manager, Amanda. Imogen is just 6 years old and 4 months into probably 18 months of 3 weekly chemotherapy.

In support of Imogen, some colleagues are family members are raising money to provide peripheral support such as accommodation for parents, teaching for the children whilst at hospital and play assistance.

The support would help make things a little easier during what must be an extremely difficult time. All donations will go to the Piam Brown Ward at Southampton General Hospital.

Tracey Healey, Business Administrator at BPE and organiser of the ride, said:

“Our group is certainly of mixed ability.

Some of us have ridden for years, some of us haven’t been on a bike for over decade and a couple of us didn’t even own a bike before this challenge!

But we have all come together to set ourselves a new challenge whilst also raising money for an extremely worthy cause.”

Managing Director of BPE, Mike Brown, said:

“I have been really impressed at the way the team have come together for this worthy cause. Their enthusiasm and motivation has been inspirational.

We hope to reach our target providing a worthy boost to the funds of the Children Oncology ward at Southampton General Hospital.”

The London to Brighton Bike Ride launched in 1975 with just 36 participants. Since then, the ride has grown from 36 riders in its first year to over 15,000 cyclists in 2016.

Well done for raising awareness of Langerhans Cells Histiocytosis, and the amazing children oncology unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Coincidentally, my son was also diagnosed with the same illness, Langerhans Cells Histiocytosis, when he was only 13 months old. He was also treated by the same exerts at the Piam Brown Ward, and had a 10 years’ follow-up. My son is now a healthy 15 years old teenager, thanks to the medical treatment he received in Southampton.

We wish Imogen all the best, and good luck with the BPE team of fundraisers! Hope your trainings go well.
