Chandler’s Ford Changes. What’s Your View?

September 24, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 11 Comments

Chandler's Ford

Chandler’s Ford is changing. Recent changes are in its centre, wherever that is, its public buildings, new community halls, library, parks, shops and recreational facilities. Even Eastleigh Borough Council has recently moved into new premises.

Less obvious but marching slowly on are changes in its older residential areas. [Read more…] about Chandler’s Ford Changes. What’s Your View?

My Isle Of Wight Summer Staycation

August 9, 2014 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Osborne House Victoria's letter

I haven’t seen my son for 5 days as he had been ‘borrowed’ by my neighbours. Unfortunately he is coming home tomorrow.

My friend and neighbour borrowed my son for a week to the Isle of Wight, so that my single child and her single child could have fun together camping and playing with their family dogs. [Read more…] about My Isle Of Wight Summer Staycation

Queen Victoria’s Bed Cover From China

August 6, 2014 By Janet Williams 9 Comments

Osborne House Feature

We visited Osborne House on the Isle of Wight yesterday. I had a discovery.

In Queen Victoria’s bedroom, I saw her famous bed.

According to Stephen Regan from the Open University, at the end of her life, the Queen was nursed in this bedroom by her personal physician, Dr James Reid. [Read more…] about Queen Victoria’s Bed Cover From China

A Temple For A Tooth?

August 5, 2014 By Mike Sedgwick 4 Comments

Devout Buddhist in Sri Lanka.

Tourists know Kandy for the Temple of the Tooth. They are bussed in during the late afternoon and dine in a hotel. The next morning they are conducted around the Temple of the Tooth after leaving their shoes at the gate. Then they are back on the bus and off to Nurawa Eliya and the tea plantations.

Tourists don’t see Kandy City, nor do they see the Tooth. It is too sacred. [Read more…] about A Temple For A Tooth?

Memory Of Peter Green – Part 2

July 29, 2014 By Wendy Martin 4 Comments

© Wendy Martin: My mother at the front door.

1958: The Move to Eastleigh

On my mother’s fortieth birthday my father presented her with a box. Inside was the key to their first house on Brookwood Avenue, not far from their new business The Sleep Shop on Leigh Road (now the Kentucky Fried Chicken). My mother said that she was excited to finally move into a house of her own, and out of the rented flat at Stag Gates. [Read more…] about Memory Of Peter Green – Part 2

Lamson Pneumatic Tube System

June 5, 2014 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Two days ago, Wendy Martin wrote beautifully about her father Peter Green with fascinating details. Peter Green’s furniture business of 58 years’ history has been transformed over the years and the store in Chandler’s Ford is contemporary and the decor modern.

Wendy’s family story inspired me to introduce Jacksons department store in Reading to you. [Read more…] about Lamson Pneumatic Tube System

Memory of Peter Green – Part 1

June 3, 2014 By Wendy Martin 13 Comments

Wendy Martin feature. Peter Green, Chandler's Ford.

My father’s real name was Alfred Thomas Green. He was born in 1915 in Nuneaton, Warwickshire. The Green side of the family were the undertakers and antique dealers in his home town, and his mother’s side, the Currins, were the confectioners.

The Currin family owned a big piece of land called Pringle Fields, which I now believe is a park. I have a picture of my great grandparents posing, Victorian style, [Read more…] about Memory of Peter Green – Part 1

Winchester Cathedral Update

May 28, 2014 By Margaret Owens 2 Comments

Last year Winchester Cathedral succeeded in their bid for a grant of £10.5 million Heritage Lottery Fund. That was good news.

Becoming a ‘friend’ of the cathedral I have recently been catching up with what is happening now as well as plans for the future as explained by Illumination, their development update. [Read more…] about Winchester Cathedral Update
