Spar Shop on Hursley Road

March 27, 2014 By Janet Williams 3 Comments

Update: November 2015:

The Shah family no longer runs the Spar on Hursley Road. The new owner is Mr Patel.

According to Jane Archer from the Methodist Church, for many years – each Wednesday – free milk and a newspaper have been given to the Coffee Room at the Methodist Church by the owners of the Hursley Road Spar shop, the Shah family.

They have now ceased to own the shop but the new owner, Mr Patel, has very kindly decided to continue this practice. The Coffee Room is extremely grateful for this unsolicited generosity, and a letter has been sent to thank Mr. Patel.

My original post: Spar Shop on Hursley Road

My favourite local shop is the Spar shop on Hursley Road in Chandler’s Ford, opposite to Park Surgery.

The Spar shop has been a family business since 1984.

Krutika and her husband Sam Shah took over the business in November 2002, but sadly Sam died of bowel cancer on the 30th of March 2009, aged only 49.

My favourite food from the Spar shop is their home-made samosas. My earthly happiness is achieved when I leave the shop with two home-made vegetable and lamb samosas.

Every Sunday morning my son would pick up The Sunday Times from the shop for me, and buy his sweets for the week.

Krutika has also started selling home-made Indian curries, such as Chicken Madras, fairly hot (£3.39), Chicken Tikka Masala, medium hot (£3.99), and Chicken Jalfrezi, hot (£3.99). They are freshly cooked and delicious.

Krutika came to England in 1985. Her Spar business is a bonus to the community. Krutika and her assistants are all friendly and helpful. This is a lovely store where you get a smile, a chat, and fresh home-made food that you don’t find in other stores.
