Relish Canteen at Chandler’s Ford Central Precinct

November 8, 2015 By Janet Williams 5 Comments

Updated May 2017: Relish Canteen has now closed.

Below is the original post published on 8th November 2015:

A new coffee shop at the Central Precinct in Chandler’s Ford!

Relish Canteen, a great place to meet and eat, opened on Tuesday 3rd of November 2015.

The owner Tim Bond also owns an established business at the Central Precinct, Upfront and Personnel, which specialises in construction sector recruitment.

Tim took over the catering business from Sue Mair, who used to own K’Sue Raa Coffee Bar. Now Sue works for Tim, and both are happy.

Tim has totally transformed the traditional coffee bar. Relish Canteen is modern, welcoming, and has a more relaxing and stylish feel. The walls, featuring elegant wallpaper design, are painted with lovely summer moss.

Relish Canteen: corporate sponsor of the Encephalitis Society

Relish Canteen is a corporate sponsor of The Encephalitis Society.

Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain. Tim Bond, in his website, said he was affected by this devastating illness.

Tim said, “I’m not fully recovered but I’m a heck of a lot better than I was and I know I’m much luckier than a lot of people who are hit by this potentially deadly illness. Now I’m in a position to help the charity that helped me and extended the hand of friendship when I so desperately needed comfort and support.”

“Elegant wallpaper design.” When I saw your picture I thought “retro, 1950”. I have to say that the chairs and tables look better, more comfortable. I will give it a try when I get back especially as I had an interest in encephalitis also.

I walked past the ‘canteen’ again today and had a bit of examination. No I wouldn’t call it ‘retro, 1950’.

I also wonder why a coffee shop / cafe is called a ‘canteen’. Canteen reminds me of school or college life, but as language evolves, canteen may now have a different connotation for poshness.

We have eaten there 3 times since it opened under the new ownership (we used to eat there twice a week when Sue ran it). Great that Sue has stayed on working for Tim. The seating is more comfortable and the new layout works better allowing room for more covers. Yes the ambience is nice, the food is more interesting and the service is as good as ever!!
We hope to continue eating there, pleasent surroundings, nice food, nice people and reasonable value.
