Meet Art Student Dorothy At China Town Winchester

January 26, 2014 By Janet Williams 4 Comments

Meet Dorothy Yip, a new Art student at Winchester School of Art.

Dorothy has just arrived in Winchester from Hong Kong a few months ago to study Art. She loves oil painting. This will be her first Chinese New Year in the UK. She told me she feels a bit lonely.

I met the beautiful 20-year-old student from Winchester School of Art, of University of Southampton, in Winchester yesterday. To be precise, I met her at China Town supermarket, where she worked part-time as a shop assistant. Yesterday was her second day of working.

Dorothy told me she has not had many friends yet. As she does not drink, she does not go to the pub, where a lot of students socialise.

Dorothy is actually doing the second year of the course. She will be studying two years on the course, instead of three years.

Where are the Chinese supermarkets? Is there any?

I heard you asking the questions.

China Town Supermarket is located on 51 Upper Brook Street in Winchester SO23 8DG, next to KFC and Domino’s Pizza. China Town used to be in Parchment Street. China Town is now also serving hot food.

The owner has another shop in Shirley: 1 Marlborough Rd, Southampton SO15 3ND.

I do my oriental shopping in China Town in Winchester. I normally buy a big bag of rice of 10kg or 20kg. Thai Fragrance Rice (or called Jasmine rice) is my favourite. I grew up eating Thai Fragrance Rice. It is simply the best.

If you come across a man carrying a 20kg of rice on his shoulder along the Winchester High Street to get to the car park, he is probably my dutiful husband.

I also buy fish ball, chillies, instant noodles and lots of root ginger. Yesterday, I also bought a few packs of delicious roasted sunflower seeds for the New Year. I had nearly finished one pack already last night.

When I first moved to Chandler’s Ford about 14 years ago, my friend used to take me to shop at Yau Brothers supermarket at Princes St, Southampton SO14 5RP. A lot of Chinese caterers and foreign students tend to shop at Yao Brothers.

These days, I tend to shop at China Town in Winchester, as the parking is much easier.

I took some photos of China Town supermarket in Winchester to show you:

Happy shopping!

Thank you for your comment, Wil. I’ve seen more and more students from Asia studying in Winchester, and I hope you’ll find your community there and share your stories with us.
