March Gardening Tips by Wellie

Dead head daffodils as they fade, but allow the foliage to die down naturally. Feed borders with a general purpose fertiliser. It is best to get supports into borders early, so that plants can grow up through them.

Shrubs can be moved now and should re-establish quickly. Lift and divide overgrown clumps of herbaceous perennials that were not split in the Autumn. Overcrowded clumps of snowdrops and winter aconites can be lifted and divided after they have finished flowering.

This is the last chance to prune wisteria before it starts to grow, as well as removing vigorous growth, this creates the spurs (short stumps) that bear the fat flower buds. Mow lawns if the weather is mild enough and the grass shows signs of growth.

In late March apply a high nitrogen spring/summer lawn fertiliser. Rake lawns with a spring tine rake to remove any moss and thatch. Remove net coverings placed over ponds to protect it from autumn leaf fall.

Plant first early potatoes now. Lettuce, rocket, carrots and peas can be sown outside when the soil has warmed up. Gooseberries and currants can be pruned now as the sap is beginning to rise, so the cuts will heal faster.

Oh dear, I’m way behind on the jobs. Good weather needed and more determination on my part. Just been looking for the grass amid the moss where the lawn used to be. Time spent now saves time on those sunny days when you would rather sit in a deckchair.
