On return from holiday in the early evening we hired a taxi from Southampton Parkway Station and arrived safely home shortly afterwards. It was a nice clean taxi with a pleasant and helpful driver.
Next morning, we could not find a small black bag. It contained credit cards, driving licence and money. It also had notes on the plot for a book being written. After a failed search we cancelled the cards, there had been no activity with them.
My wife went down to Parkway and asked who the taxi driver might have been. They all recognised her description and suggested she phone the taxi licencing company for his phone number.
The company took the problem on board but did not give the man’s number. They got him to phone us instead. He searched his cab and found the bag in the back. Shortly afterwards he turned up at our door and handed it over.
He left financially better off and with a bottle of good red wine and our gratitude.
The following day the taxi company phoned to ask if we had recovered the lost bag. That was very good of them.
Phew, what a relief. Without your credit cards and driving licence you have no identity and someone else might impersonate you.
So, a big thank you to all the taxi staff of Eastleigh and to one in particular. He knows who he is.
My rules for travelling are to have a case light enough to carry and a shoulder bag, just two pieces. Then you always have one hand free and can manage stairs.
Wear a shirt or jacket with pockets for passports, boarding pass etc.
When leaving anywhere, pack up. Then have a good look around, hotel wardrobe, bedside tables and drawers. I try not to put anything in drawers. Then check the bathroom for razor, hairbrush etc.
Always make sure you are carrying two bags.
Needless to say I do not always follow my own rules and have left decent shirts, books and toiletries all around the world. One rule I have managed to follow is the check for Tickets, Money, Passport.
On this occasion the two bags rule was broken and one of us was carrying two shoulder bags and a suitcase.
