Celebrate Chandler’s Ford Library gaining Grade II listed building status

A while ago, in her article Top 10 Reasons to Love Books, Allison Symes told us Chandler’s Ford Library had just been awarded Grade II Listed Building status. BBC News carried this exciting news about Chandler’s Ford Library on 1st August 2015.

Chandler’s Ford Library was designed in 1981-2 by County Architect, Colin Stansfield Smith.

If you haven’t heard of the library’s new status yet, here is an interview about the library by the BBC:

On the Historic England site, you can read more about Chandler’s Ford Library, its history, the reasons for designation of the Grade II status.

Don’t forget to attend Martin’s talk at Chandler’s Ford Library on Thursday 19th November. I’m sure you’ll have an inspiring afternoon.

I lived in Chandlers Ford from 1956 to 1961. My home address was 112 Winchester Road with other family members living in Oakmount Road (green grocers). I attended North End Secondary Modern School in the late 50’s to early 60’s.

The articles brought back many memories as I had the same teachers as Martin. I was able to locate my best friend who lived in Hursley Road, she now lives in So. Carolina and I am in California USA.

I am trying to find how to get in touch with Martin Napier to see what years he attended North End. My book “Reflected Highway” includes the time I lived in Chandlers Ford and attended North End.

      Hello Pauline,

I was at North End from September 1958 until I left in June, 1963.

The class I started in, in 1958 was in one of the “cardboard classrooms” on the edge of the boys playground. I cannot remember who our form teacher was though.

In our class was a girl, surname Yarney, who died in the swimming pool at Bishopstoke. In our class was Colin Bielby, Michael Goodall, Steven Worthy, Andrew Grapes, Nigel Perfect, & myself, among others of course.

Before North End, Andy Grapes & Nigel Perfect were among my classmates at Merdon Avenue School.

      Hope this is of help.

      Regards,

      Martin.

        Hi Martin,

Thank you for getting back to me; it seems like you were 2 yrs behind me. I do remember Mr. Smith the “Robot”, “old” Charlie Tryhorn – he loved to throw blackboard dusters at anyone not paying attention. I too sang in the school choir.

I remember Mr. Parry and Mr. McGregor – our geography teacher was a Mr. Bigelow and I think the history teacher was Mr. Dodd. Did you have “Monty” teaching math? He totally ignored the girls as he didn’t think they were any good at mathematics!!!!

I was a Prefect! Some of my class mates were Elizabeth Wilson – Derek Pearson – Mary Denham. Valerie Tucker was a good friend and I have located her living in South Carolina USA and talk all the time. I am going to send her your stories.

I did write two stories which were published in the community website but I think they have been archived as I cannot locate them. I submitted them in 2012 approx. “Childhood Memories of Chandlers Ford” and “Finding a Friend”.

Sorry to be so long winded, must be the author in me. Do you remember the green grocers in Oakmount Road near Winchester Road? I lived next door to the Halfway Inn at 112 Winchester Road which I understand is now a hair salon.

Would love to hear more from you.

        Regards,
        Pauline (Toni)
